Review #374 - Jefferson's Ocean Voyage 30 Single Barrel - Wiseguy Lounge Pick 'Al Capone'

Wiseguy Lounge Barrel Pick Series: Part 6 of 20

This Wiseguy Lounge pick is a single barrel variant of Jefferson's Ocean, a bourbon that has been aged at sea on ships traveling the world. This pick comes from Voyage 30, one of the most recent trips - specific details of this journey are hard to find, but these trips often start on the East Coast of the USA before traveling around Australia and East Asia and later returning home.

This barrel pick is bottled at barrel proof - 58.1% in this case, or 116.2 proof. It's named for Al Capone, one of the most famous American gangsters, who was a crime boss in Chicago in the 1920s and 1930s. That's quite a big name to live up to - will the bourbon earn that title?

Price: USD 100 (2024)

Age Statement: NAS

Strength: 58.1% ABV

Details: Voyage 30

Tasting Methodology: Reviewed 1 time; bottle at 20% fill level at time of review. Tasted in a nosing glass, rested 10-15 minutes

Nose: Sweet and oaky, with dark brown sugar, caramel, and barbecued wood. There are little savory hints here and there, and then a little bit of a spice kick: paprika, specifically. With time, a burnt toast note arrives.

Palate: The mouthfeel is medium-thick, but it softens with time. This palate is even sweeter than the nose, with mushy bananas, clove, brown sugar, and cream. There's a little prickle from both ethanol and some tannins; an interesting palate.

Finish: Medium-long, with old brown overripe bananas, caramel as well, this is a bit like a banana split sundae. Tannins from the oak and some anise add a spicy element, and in the aftertaste, sweet cream soda lingers.

Final Note: This was quite interesting, a bit of a different profile that we remember tasting in other Jefferson's products. A lot more creamy and yellow fruit-forward, and the cream soda notes in the palate and finish were a real treat. The heat does show through a bit on the palate with that ethanol tickle, but that's a minor gripe.

Value is okay here - Jefferson's products are often a bit pricy for what they offer, and this bottle does come with a $100 price tag, but it also has very nice flavor.

Our Average Rating: 7.3 / 10

In the current whisky landscape of increasing prices and variable quality, we've added a value rating to our reviews that relates to the score and the available pricing of each whisky. This roughly equates to a 0-10 scale; no reviews so far have exceeded a score of 10, although it is technically possible for the formula to produce a value rating higher than 10 with a high enough score and low enough price.

Value Rating: 6.25
