Review #464 - Indri 9 Year Ex-Red Wine Single Cask - ImpEx Selection
ImpEx Beverages, a US-based importer of whiskies and other spirits, has chosen a number of single casks from the brands that they represent. Piccadily distillery, home of Indri single malt whisky, is one of those brands - there are a few US-exclusive casks that have been selected for the market.
This example is a 9 year old single cask which was fully matured in an ex-red wine barrel (one of the cask types used in Indri's 'Trini' release). That's quite an age statement for Indian whisky - how will that length of maturation in their intense climate affect the wood profile of the spirit? After all, the area where this whisky matures can see freezing temperatures in the winters, but also 50C heat waves in the summer.
Like Indri's other whiskies, this was made using 6 row barley, as opposed to the 2 row variety that's commonly used for single malt in other countries. This cask, number 3195, was bottled in February of 2024, yielding 138 bottles at a strength of 58.5% ABV.
Indri 9 Year Ex-Red Wine Single Cask - ImpEx Selection
India - Single Malt
Current Locally Available Price: USD 184 (2025)
Age Statement: 9 Years
Strength: 58.5% ABV
Cask Makeup: Ex-red wine cask
Details: Not chill filtered, no color added; distilled September 10, 2014, bottled February 2024; cask 2195; 138 bottles
Tasting Methodology: Reviewed 1 time; bottle 90% fill level at time of review. Tasted in a Glencairn glass, rested 10-15 minutes
Nose: Rich and musty, full of dark red and purple fruits: raisins and prunes, especially. There's some sweetness from caramel, but also a hint of a prickly oak tannin, even on the nose; with time, this smells more syrupy sweet, and a perfume element is added.
Palate: The mouthfeel is medium-thick; this is warm, spicy, and quite oaky. Tons of grapefruit greets us at the front of the palate, soon accompanied by strawberry and grape skins. Lots of oak notes, too: wood char, musty damp wood, old polished furniture wood; there's a soft earthy flavor in the background.
Finish: Tart strawberry continues from the palate. This is still warm and quite spicy, and the polished wood note from earlier grows stronger. It's a medium-long finish.
Final Note: Wow, what a flavor bomb of a whisky. The 9 years of aging in India's climate definitely shows with all of those spicy oak notes, especially the polished furniture wood flavor; red fruit flavors were plentiful because of the wine influence, too. Based on the color and the amount of fruit, we wouldn't be surprised if this was a first fill wine cask.
Value is okay, a little below average, just because this is an expensive bottle at $180+. Could be worth a splurge if you enjoy the Indri flavor profile, but want a cask strength version with the flavor turned up to the maximum.
Our Average Rating: 8.0 / 10
In the current whisky landscape of increasing prices and variable quality, we've added a value rating to our reviews that relates to the score and the available pricing of each whisky. This roughly equates to a 0-10 scale; no reviews so far have exceeded a score of 10, although it is technically possible for the formula to produce a value rating higher than 10 with a high enough score and low enough price.
Value Rating: 5.63
