Review #338 - Amrut Aatma Swedish Oak Single Cask

Amrut's Aatma Collector Series consists of a number of single cask variants, each with a unique cask type. We've seen Sauternes, Port, French oak, and others - here's an example that was matured in Swedish oak. It's a virgin oak cask as well - no prior contents, but the oak was toasted before use.

This spirit was made using six-row barley, which is a more common practice in India for malt whisky, and it was distilled in 2016; bottling took place in early 2023. There's no age statement on the bottle, but the whisky is around 6 years old.

Amrut Aatma Swedish Oak Single Cask

India - Single Malt

Current Locally Available Price: USD 164 (2024)

Age Statement: NAS

Strength: 56.5% ABV

Cask Makeup: Virgin toasted Swedish oak cask

Details: Distilled 2016, bottled 2023; cask 5360; 150 bottles

Tasting Methodology: Reviewed 1 time; bottle at 50% fill level at time of review. Tasted in a Glencairn glass, rested 10-15 minutes

Nose: Rich and nutty, and there's a surprising amount of fruity character: dried fruit like figs, as well as some orange. The complexion is relatively dark, and we found hints of rubber as well.

Palate: A medium-thick mouthfeel, and it's a blast of flavor. The strength of the spirit is bringing some heat, and we get a rich, oaky profile, along with plenty of spice. There are purple fruits, too: figs and prunes, for the most part.

Finish: Long and toasty, quite warm, and plenty of oak. In the aftertaste, there are hints of tannic red wine.

Final Note: More fruit than we expected, but there was also plenty of oak influence from that toasted virgin cask. Quite tasty, but the spirit hasn't quite been tamed with those 6 years of aging - it was quite hot.

These Aatma Collector Series bottles are very expensive, too, meaning that value isn't particularly great, even with the good flavor.

Our Average Rating: 7.0 / 10

In the current whisky landscape of increasing prices and variable quality, we've added a value rating to our reviews that relates to the score and the available pricing of each whisky. This roughly equates to a 0-10 scale; no reviews so far have exceeded a score of 10, although it is technically possible for the formula to produce a value rating higher than 10 with a high enough score and low enough price.

Value Rating: 5.12
