Review #339 - Glengoyne 15 Year PX Cask Edition

Glengoyne's 15 year old PX Cask Edition is a travel retail exclusive, which the brand claims to show off the distillery's long-established style. We get a pleasant 48% ABV for the strength, a step above most of the distillery's core range, and this is also not chill filtered and lacks added coloring.

Glengoyne 15 Year PX Cask Edition

Scotland/Highland - Single Malt

Current Locally Available Price: USD 141 (2024)

Age Statement: 15 Years

Strength: 48% ABV

Cask Makeup: Finished in ex-Pedro Ximenez sherry casks

Details: Not chill filtered, no color added; 3,000 bottles

Tasting Methodology: Reviewed 1 time; bottle at 70% fill level at time of review. Tasted in a Glencairn glass, rested 10-15 minutes

Nose: Rich and dark - syrupy, with chocolate and plenty of red fruit. Raspberry and Luxardo cherries stood out, especially.

Palate: Sweet berry jams, like strawberry and blackberry; chocolate returns, and the texture is syrupy once more. The mouthfeel is medium... later on, cherry and glazed strawberry notes grow even stronger.

Finish: Chocolate syrup mixes with hazelnut - a Nutella note. This finish is medium-long and quite sweet, and those red fruit notes still linger; almond and brown sugar can be found in the aftertaste.

Final Note: This is a tasty whisky, and the style is quite cask-dominated - the PX sherry casks have taken over the spirit. We did enjoy the red fruits and the nutty notes in the finish, and the mouthfeel was nice, but nothing special.

Nowadays these travel retail bottles are becoming easier to find outside of duty-free stores, and we would be able to order this bottle online; that said, it does come with quite a cost, so value is just okay.

Our Average Rating: 7.5 / 10

In the current whisky landscape of increasing prices and variable quality, we've added a value rating to our reviews that relates to the score and the available pricing of each whisky. This roughly equates to a 0-10 scale; no reviews so far have exceeded a score of 10, although it is technically possible for the formula to produce a value rating higher than 10 with a high enough score and low enough price.

Value Rating: 5.76

About Us: We're a husband and wife review team living in the Midwest United States. Generally, our reviews and tasting notes will be a compilation of both of our experiences with a whisky over several tasting sessions.
