Review #509 - Filey Bay Yorkshire Day 2022 Release
Filey Bay is a brand owned by the Spirit of Yorkshire distillery - this English distillery began operating their still in 2016, though their history goes back further than that as a brewery. As the distillery's name suggests, they're located in Yorkshire, and each year, they commemorate that location with a special bottling: the Yorkshire Day release. Here, we're looking at the 2022 edition, which was the third in the series.
It doesn't carry an age statement, but considering the age of the distillery, the whisky could be at most 6 years old for this 2022 release. We do get information about the cask makeup, though: it's a combination of ex-bourbon, Oloroso, and Moscatel. Those wine casks give this a nice rich color, which we know is natural; the release yielded a tiny 1,500 bottles in total.
Filey Bay Yorkshire Day 2022 Release
England - Single Malt

Age Statement: NAS
Strength: 55% ABV
Cask Makeup: Ex-bourbon, Oloroso sherry, and Moscatel casks

Tasting Methodology: Reviewed 1 time; bottle 30% fill level at time of review. Tasted in a nosing glass, rested 15+ minutes
Nose: Dense and closed up at first, but time brings brown sugar, grapes, and some old polished oak - this shows a surprisingly mature profile. Savory elements arrive - peppered steak, and it's earthy, too.
Palate: The thickness of the mouthfeel is medium; it's quite a fruity palate, purple fruits specifically. We get some fruitcake and a warm cinnamon spice; it's rich and pleasant, with decent texture.
Finish: Medium-long, warming and oily. There's a hint of salt adding a coastal element, some fruit like white grape, and a sweetness from brown sugar.
Final Note: Very tasty whisky - definitely cask dominated, but it's cozy and has a great 'Christmas spice' vibe to it. The elevated strength means that texture is good and the finish continues for a while; the nose especially had a prominent oak scent, surprising for the age of the liquid.
Value is okay - this isn't a cheap bottle at over $100, but it's fun to dig into those dark, dense flavors, and there are plenty of them.
Our Average Rating: 7.5 / 10
In the current whisky landscape of increasing prices and variable quality, we've added a value rating to our reviews that relates to the score and the available pricing of each whisky. This roughly equates to a 0-10 scale; no reviews so far have exceeded a score of 10, although it is technically possible for the formula to produce a value rating higher than 10 with a high enough score and low enough price.
Value Rating: 6.26
